stencil dying

three sheets of mulberry paper are coated and glued together with persimmon tannin, smoked for durability, aged, and then the designs are cut. rice paste resist is applied through the stencil onto the fabric which is then dyed. there's a lady at one of the flea markets that sells these stencils, she has some really beautiful ones. this one is on a light table at the museum of folk arts.
